Why Coaches NEED Coaches

0

Maybe it was the cold weather starting to get to me. Or maybe it was a bad case of some over-spicy Mexican food. Or the bourbon the night before. Or even all of the above.

But something was off. I was missing something.

What was supposed to be a normal training session in the gym – where I love to go to blow off steam, de-stress and throw around heavy weights – instead turned into this festival of unmotivated boredom.

My lifts were suffering. I really didn’t want to be there. I wasn’t having any fun.

It’s like this chicken and egg ongoing circle of suck. If you are not motivated, your workout can suffer. And if your workouts are suffering, who the hell is going to get motivated to train?

So there I was: staring down the barbell at my next set of deadlifts when I didn’t pay close enough attention to my form and boom. I hurt myself.

Nah, it wasn’t bad. But it was bad enough to give me a wake up call. I literally called it a day right there. Waved the white flag. Admitted defeat.

Getting stuck in these ruts happen to everyone. Even the fitness professionals like myself that live, eat and breathe this health stuff on the regular. It’s how we can overcome these obstacles that will allow us all to successful long term.

For me, that meant a little self-evaluation.

I wasn’t quite getting the most out of my current training plan. Why? Because I was writing the program for myself.

Program design is one of my favorite hobbies. I do it all of the time for my online coaching clients, creating new and personalized workout plans on a monthly basis.

But when it came time to actually work on me, myself and I … I wasn’t quite hitting the mark. I wasn’t having fun anymore. It was more about just getting in and cranking out some weights, hitting my progressions and then going home.

Working out is truly meant to be hard W-O-R-K. Heck, if it was easy, we’d call it playing out. That doesn’t mean it can’t be F-U-N while we train, too. I love training. But when the stress of keeping up with my growing business came crashing down on me, the first thing to suffer was yours truly.

Then it hit me.

I was thinking too damn hard. This whole fitness thing is literally my entire life and the gym is supposed to be my escape. But, if I’m responsible for my own training, how can I truly be escaping the everyday routine?

Like I said … it’s that chicken and egg never-ending circle situation. Just don’t try to understand it, ‘cuz it’ll blow your mind.

Time to pull up my big boy pants and get to work. And that meant letting someone else do the work for me.

I enlisted the services of a fellow personal trainer to be my coach. That’s right, I’m a fitness trainer, and I have my own fitness coach. This allows me to get out of my own head when it comes to my training.

Now, I can literally enter the gym and let someone else do the program designing. I can turn my brain off for an hour and simply focus on that one particular workout of the day.

The best part of this is the extra push.

Anyone who has ever worked with a coach knows that we like to get the most out of our athletes and trainees. Soooo that maybe means sometimes fudging the clock a little longer to turn a 45-second plank into a 55 or 60-second plank. Sometimes it means pushing for that extra push-up when I originally said 22 would be enough. Sometimes it means calling you out on the gym floor for not giving max effort.

And that’s exactly what my coach now does for me.

And with that, I can honestly say I know exactly how all of my one-on-one clients feel when I apply that coaching pressure to them.

Signing up for and working with my coach, has been one of the best decisions I’ve ever made.

My lifts are back up. My production is at an-all time high. My form has never been better (yes, sometimes even trainers work in some not-so-awesome habits). And most of all, I’m having fun again.

And this works because I have a great relationship and trust in my coach. That’s the key.

In order for the coaching relationship to be successful, you must be able to let go of whatever macho “I know better than this guy” crap and throw your trust in this person that’ll be leading you on a journey.

It’s definitely a journey alright. Leading a healthy lifestyle is much more than the one hour a day you spend in the gym. It’s what happens in the other 23 hours of the day that makes for long-term success.

That’s why I constantly trade notes and offer feedback to my coach. And it’s why I encourage and do the same of all of my coaching clients.

The accountability. The support. The knowledge. It all comes from the foundation of trust. So the first rule in finding a coach is making sure this trainer is elite and has delivered on results. The relationship will only build from there.

I firmly believe that everyone should have a coach in some area or aspect of their life.

For me, I not only have a fitness trainer, I also work closely with a business mentor and coach.

They keep me accountable. They challenge me to be the best that I can be each and every day.

The biggest benefits to working with a coach:

Motivation – It’s just human nature to work hard and perform better when we are being pushed and when we are being encouraged. A decent coach can find ways to push you to be better. A great coach reaches inside of your gut, finds that extra sauce of awesome that you have bottled up and motivates you to be great in and out of the gym.

Learning – Obviously this comes with the territory of working hand-in-hand with a trainer or coach that (hopefully) knows more about this subject than you. Throughout the coaching experience, you’ll not only see quality results, but will learn in the process to set you up for long-term success even after you’ve decided to go it alone in your own training.

Accountability – This is the biggest prize of all. It’s the No. 1 reason why most dieters fail in their pursuit of healthy happiness: because they are not accountable to someone or something. Why do those funny points system plans work? Not because they have a cool smartphone app, but the people who are usually successful in this arena are usually the ones that are being held accountable by a friend, family member, or better yet … a coach. In hiring a coach or trainer, the financial investment alone will apply some accountability – if you are paying for the services, you are much less likely to skip workouts. And in just working with a coach, we as humans are designed to want to do well for that person who’ve trusted to have a level of authority over us. We have to report in to our coach and the simple fear of letting that person down is enough to push us to do better.

Friendship – Just as you are investing in your coach, your trainer is investing in you. Sure there is the financial investment. But, I’m talking about the emotional aspect of really breaking down some walls and overcoming some pretty hefty obstacles both physically and even emotionally for people. In working closely with my clients, I learn so much more than just how many squats they can do in 30 seconds. We bond as people who learn so much about certain fears and challenges and successes and achievements that make us tick as human beings. There’s a reason why it’s called “personal” training, after all.

These benefits are just the tip of the iceberg. There are so many additional awesome things that can come from having that accountability partner in the former of a trainer or mentor or coach.

Don’t just take my word for it. Here are the personal accounts straight from the peeps that have experienced all of the benefits of working exclusively with me.

“It’s been a total blast working with you, Pete. The workouts are fun, and most of all, they are effective. My muscles are on fire for hours after my training sessions are over. You keep things simple and easy to follow by tailoring my diet and workouts for my specific goals and updated as I progressed. I’ve continued to see fat melt away while strength and muscle improves and now I’m getting closer and closer to my ultimate goal of being below 10% body fat.”
– Mike C.

“Working with Pete, I was finally able to discover how to drop unwanted weight successfully without crazy fad diets, wacky workout videos and calorie calculators. As a busy mom, this plan was perfect because the workouts were short, but effective and the nutritional guidelines were simple and easy-to-follow. Pete provided constant help and most importantly, he kept me accountable so that I made consistent and long-lasting progress.”
– Erin, Macon, GA

Both Mike and Erin rocked it in my coaching program. They’ve both achieved amazing results and I couldn’t be more proud of their success.

And now I’m ready to help you. My online training program has been revamped and is better than ever and now I’m ready to bring on a new class of peeps to help making similar transformations.

How do you know if you’re ready for online coaching? Great question. If you check off any of the questions below, then it’s time to roll up your sleeves and get to work. Are you …

1. Lacking in motivation?
2. Spinning your wheels in the gym?
3. Not seeing long-lasting results?
4. Confused of all of the (mis)information on the interwebz and in the media?
5. Tired of not progressing?

If any of these apply to you, it’s time to consider working with a pro who can help guide you along this journey.

I’m excited to work with you and help achieve greatness, just like I’ve helped Mike and Erin and just as my coach has done for me.

Let’s work together and hold each other accountable. Let’s build a bond that will last a lifetime. Let’s finally break through those plateaus and barriers and realize the results that you’ve been dying to see.
